7 Signs That Your Meditation Routine Isn't Right for You

A meditation routine that fades away after just a few weeks doesn’t automatically mean that meditation “doesn’t work for you.” Often, it points to a mismatch between your routine and your life. Here are seven signs, along with what each one teaches you:

1. You keep putting off your session until “later tonight” — usually, the timing is the problem, not the habit itself. Setting a fixed time early in the day helps.
2. You need a special space or atmosphere — a technique that works anywhere is more sustainable.
3. You compare every session to “the best session ever” — expectations are too high, while the quality of individual sessions naturally varies.
4. You often feel more tense after the session than before it —this may indicate a technique that requires concentration rather than being effortless.
5. You have to psych yourself up every single time — the session length or timing is often off; starting short and building up works better.
6. You have no one to ask for help when it doesn’t feel right — techniques with built-in follow-up support resolve this systematically.
7. You measure success solely by whether or not you meditated — a missed session is just that, not a failed habit.
