Transcendental Meditation (TM) is a scientifically documented meditation technique that companies can use for structural stress reduction and workplace wellbeing. In controlled research, TM lowers the stress hormone cortisol by an average of 30% and measurably improves work and personal relationships compared with control groups. Because the technique is effortless and requires no concentration, it can be learned by any employee in four sessions, regardless of prior meditation experience. The employer pays for the course once. After that, every employee keeps lifelong follow-up free of charge, at any of the 20 TM centres in the Netherlands, also after changing jobs.

Unlike techniques that require concentration or actively clearing the mind, TM is effortless: employees learn to let the mind settle naturally, without willpower or training in mindfulness. That is why the technique works equally well for a first-time meditator and for someone who has tried other methods without success.
The practice takes 20 minutes, twice a day — once before or at the start of the working day, once in the early evening — and requires no equipment, app or ongoing supervision once learned. Because instruction is personal and one-to-one, it suits a workforce with very different ages, roles and stress levels. Read more about what TM is and its documented effects on stress and mental health, cognitive function and physical health.
TM Nederland has a network of around 35 certified teachers across 20 centres nationwide, which means a course can be organised near an office location, or on-site for a whole team or department. Instruction remains personal even in a group booking: each employee still receives individual guidance during the four-session course, and lifelong follow-up support afterwards.
Invoice to the employer. For a course on site the invoice goes straight to the employer. If employees take the course themselves at a TM centre, they receive an invoice in their own name, or in the company name on request, to submit to their employer. In practice employers usually pay the course directly.
TM Nederland is taught by a registered non-profit foundation, with course fees set on an income-based, transparent scale rather than a standard commercial rate.

An eight-week training ends with its last session. An app licence ends when the contract runs out. With TM, the follow-up starts after the four days of instruction, and it costs the employer nothing extra.
For HR this means one payment per employee, with no licence and no follow-on programme. More on how it works on the follow-up page.
There is no separate leadership programme, and none is needed. Managers take the same course as everyone else, with the same personal instruction and the same lifelong follow-up. A leadership team can also take it together, on site.
For people with a full diary, what counts is that it takes little time: 20 minutes twice a day, no app, no equipment. In research, work and personal relationships improved clearly among meditators compared with the control group (see the chart above).
These are the randomised trials of TM among working people, each with a control group. For every study you can see who took part, what TM was compared with and what changed.
| Study | Participants | Compared with | Result |
|---|---|---|---|
| Khanal et al., J Affect Disord, 2026 · PubMed 42778032 | 129 staff at an Australian university | Usual wellbeing resources, 6 months | Lower perceived stress (effect size g = −0.52), less anxiety, depression and burnout, better sleep and quality of life. Productivity impairment was also measured; the abstract reports no significant effect there. |
| Joshi et al., JAMA Network Open, 2022 · PubMed 36121655 | 80 health care workers, Duke University | Usual wellbeing resources, 3 months | Emotional exhaustion fell 5.4 points more, with less insomnia and anxiety. The primary outcome, acute psychological distress, did not differ significantly. |
| Bonamer et al., J Nurs Adm, 2024 · PubMed 38078959 | 104 nurses in 3 hospitals | Wait-list group, 3 months | Less burnout, anxiety and post-traumatic stress, more flourishing. |
| Elder et al., Perm J, 2014 · PubMed 24626068 | 40 teachers and support staff at a therapeutic school | Wait-list group, 4 months | Less perceived stress, depression and burnout. |
The wider picture: a meta-analysis of 132 randomised trials with 23,080 employees, mostly mindfulness and TM, found lower stress (g = −0.51) and higher wellbeing (g = 0.41). It found no significant effect on blood pressure or cortisol. The authors rate the certainty of the evidence as moderate for wellbeing and sleep and low to very low for the other outcomes (Khanal et al., Health Psychology Review, 2026 · PubMed 41987765).
What these trials do not show: hard productivity figures such as output or revenue. A provider who promises those goes further than the research.
Chronic work stress is one of the best-documented drivers of stress-related absenteeism. TM addresses the underlying risk factors directly: the technique lowers the stress hormone cortisol by an average of 30% and is named in the 2025 US guideline on high blood pressure as a possible adjunct for elevated blood pressure — both established contributors to long-term sick leave. Because instruction is structured and personal rather than app-based, organisations can roll it out consistently across a whole workforce.
For concentration, TM's fixed, four-session course produces a consistent outcome across a team rather than depending on how often someone opens an app. Removing a major source of distraction — unmanaged stress — along with TM's own research into cognitive function and clarity of thinking, is why organisations use the technique to support focus during the working day.

Transcendental Meditation (TM) demonstrably improves employee wellbeing. This has been tested in randomised trials with a control group. In the largest, among 129 staff at an Australian university (Khanal et al., 2026), perceived stress fell clearly more over six months than among colleagues with the usual wellbeing resources, and burnout, anxiety, depression and sleep improved as well. In health care workers (Joshi et al., JAMA Network Open, 2022) and nurses (Bonamer et al., 2024), burnout and anxiety went down. Productivity is a different matter: hard figures such as output or revenue have not been shown in these trials. TM needs no concentration or prior experience and is learned in four sessions. TM is taught through personal, one-to-one instruction, which makes it scalable across a workforce of any size or composition: every employee learns at their own pace regardless of age, role or meditation experience. TM Nederland has a network of certified teachers across 20 centres, so sessions can be organised near an office location or on-site for a whole team or department.
TM is practised for 20 minutes, twice a day, sitting comfortably with the eyes closed — typically once before the working day and once in the early evening.
No. TM is an effortless technique that does not require concentration, focus or any previous experience with meditation, which is why it is accessible to an entire, diverse workforce. See what makes TM different from mindfulness and other meditation styles.
A certified TM teacher plans a course of four lessons on consecutive days, either for individual employees or for a group. The course can be given on site, for a team or department, with an invoice to the employer. Employees can also take the course at a TM centre nearby and submit the invoice to their employer; in practice employers usually pay it directly. Companies can start with a free introductory talk to explore what a programme would look like for their team.
Yes. Managers take the same course as any employee, with personal instruction and lifelong follow-up; no separate leadership programme is needed. A leadership team can take the course together on site, with an invoice to the employer. The technique takes 20 minutes twice a day, without an app or any equipment, so it fits a full diary as well.
Chronic work stress is one of the best-documented drivers of stress-related absenteeism. TM addresses the underlying risk factors directly: the technique lowers the stress hormone cortisol by an average of 30% and is named in the 2025 US guideline on high blood pressure as a possible adjunct for elevated blood pressure, both established contributors to long-term sick leave. Because instruction is structured and personal rather than app-based, organisations can roll it out consistently across a whole workforce and track uptake at a team level.
TM is taught as a fixed, structured four-session course rather than an ongoing app-based practice, which is why it produces a consistent, comparable outcome across an entire team. The technique's documented effect on lowering stress and improving work and personal relationships removes a major source of distraction, and TM's own research base includes studies on improved cognitive function and clarity of thinking.
Sustainable stress reduction requires a technique that keeps working after the training ends, without buying a new training or licence every year. TM's effects are self-sustaining because employees practise independently, twice a day, once they have learned the technique: there is no app subscription or recurring workshop to maintain the result, and follow-up stays free for life. The 30% average reduction in cortisol and the documented improvement in work and personal relationships were measured as lasting outcomes of regular practice, not a one-off session effect, which is why a company-wide rollout keeps delivering results long after the initial course.
Work-related stress is a leading reason Dutch organisations look for structural, evidence-based interventions rather than one-off wellness sessions. TM meets that need with a fixed, four-session course taught individually by a certified teacher through a nationwide network of 20 centres, so an employer can offer the same structured programme to every employee regardless of location, backed by the largest independent research base of any meditation technique.
TM is studied for its effect on EEG brain coherence — increased orderliness across brain areas linked to attention, decision-making and awareness — associated with a more developed, integrated state of consciousness rather than a momentary calm mood. For organisations looking beyond short-term stress relief toward employees' clarity and awareness, this effect is documented consistently across a workforce. Read more about TM and brain function →
With Transcendental Meditation (TM), every employee keeps lifelong follow-up free of charge after the four-lesson course. The teacher checks the practice after 10 and 20 days, group meetings follow, and for as long as they practise, employees can go to any of the 20 TM centres in the Netherlands and any certified TM centre worldwide. The employer pays once, with no licence or follow-on programme, and the follow-up still applies after a change of job. How the follow-up works →
