David Lynch and Transcendental Meditation (TM)
David Lynch (1946–2025) was a visionary artist, best known as a film director, but also active in television, music, painting, literature, and more. His films, such as *Eraserhead*, *Blue Velvet*, and *Mulholland Drive*, immerse viewers in surreal and intriguing worlds. Lynch’s influence on culture is enormous, and he is considered by many to be one of the most important filmmakers of his time.
David Lynch learned the Transcendental Meditation technique in 1973 and has practiced it daily ever since, without missing a single session. He credited TM with his creativity, energy, and happiness. In 1975, he met Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, the founder of the TM movement, which had a lasting impact on his life.
“Transcendental Meditation brings me more and more happiness. This happiness comes from within, and as a result, the outside world also seems happier.” – David Lynch
The TM technique is a simple, effortless practice performed twice a day for 20 minutes. It enables the mind to reach deeper levels of consciousness, resulting in reduced stress, better sleep, and sharper thinking.
Lynch founded the David Lynch Foundation in 2005, inspired by the positive impact of TM on children in schools. The DLF’s mission is to prevent and combat trauma and toxic stress among vulnerable groups by making the TM technique widely accessible.
Key DLF initiatives:
Since its founding, the DLF has raised over $100 million and helped more than a million people worldwide learn TM, including schoolchildren, veterans, and victims of domestic violence.
Lynch’s dedication to TM inspired many to learn the technique. Bob Roth, CEO of the DLF, said:
“David was responsible for more people learning TM than anyone else since Maharishi. That is his legacy. He wasn’t just a celebrity who lent his name to a charity; he traveled the world, working long days and weeks. Without David Lynch, we would be nowhere.”
Upon news of his passing in 2025, messages of support poured in from all over the world:
David Lynch described TM as a way to “catch the big fish”—a metaphor for achieving deeper creativity and expanded consciousness. His book *Catching the Big Fish: Meditation, Consciousness, and Creativity* offers a glimpse into how TM influenced his life and work.
Lynch’s vision and dedication have enriched not only his own life but also the lives of millions of others worldwide. His legacy lives on through the power of Transcendental Meditation and the lasting impact of the David Lynch Foundation.
