Meditation and Heart Health

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States, and it is crucial to take steps to prevent it. Eating a healthy diet and exercising regularly are well-known ways to reduce the risk of heart disease, but research has shown that the practice of Transcendental Meditation (TM) is a valuable complementary intervention.

How does TM improve heart health?

During the Transcendental Meditation technique, the mind effortlessly comes to rest and reaches a state of deep relaxation. This allows the body to release accumulated stress and relax.

Research shows that regular TM practice improves many symptoms associated with an increased risk of heart disease, including:

  • High stress levels
  • Elevated body mass index (BMI)
  • High blood pressure
  • Enlarged left ventricle (left ventricular mass)
  • Angina (chest pain)
  • High cholesterol

“Meditation definitely helps with my stress. My resting heart rate is normally 67–71. After a recent session, I checked, and my heart rate was 59! I haven’t missed a single day yet.”

Lowering blood pressure and stress

There is a strong correlation between high blood pressure (hypertension) and heart disease. High blood pressure damages the arteries and puts extra strain on the heart. It’s particularly concerning because the symptoms of high blood pressure often go unnoticed for years.

That’s why it’s important to incorporate healthy, sustainable habits into your daily life, such as:

  • Eating whole foods
  • Exercising regularly
  • Limiting tobacco and alcohol
  • Practicing daily meditation to relax the mind and body

A study by the American Heart Association states that the Transcendental Meditation technique is the only meditation practice proven to lower blood pressure.¹

A 2007 meta-analysis of 107 studies showed that regular TM practice lowers blood pressure more effectively than biofeedback, stress management, muscle relaxation, and combination therapies.

“My anxiety and heart rate have gone down, and my blood pressure is better. I’m sleeping more and better—and I haven’t slept well in years.”

TM Reduces Left Ventricular Hypertrophy

Healthcare professionals often use the “left ventricular mass” index to assess the risk of heart disease and measure the impact of blood pressure on the heart. An enlarged left ventricle is a warning sign for heart attacks, strokes, and death.

Research has shown that TM offers significant health benefits for young people, including:

  • Lower stress levels
  • Improved blood pressure
  • Improved vascular function
  • Lower respiratory rate
  • Improved cholesterol levels
  • Reduced tobacco and alcohol use

TM reduces cardiovascular risk factors

Other studies have shown that TM reduces a wide range of cardiovascular risk factors in adolescents and young adults at increased risk for hypertension.³ These risk factors include behaviors and symptoms commonly associated with heart disease.

Study participants were often able to significantly reduce their use of standard medical treatments for hypertension and heart disease.

A 2012 study demonstrated a significant reduction in the risk of heart attacks, strokes, and death in a group that regularly practiced TM, compared to a control group.

“TM is the only form of meditation that I find has a calming effect on me. My heart rate and breathing rate drop and stay lower on the days I meditate.”

Transcendental Meditation offers a natural, scientifically proven way to improve heart health, reduce stress, and lower the risk of heart disease. It is a simple, effective technique that can make a powerful difference in your overall well-being.
